DOES AI LEAN LEFT? A paper that leans left, the Washington Post (WaPo), admits that most AI models lean left too. According to its study, OpenAI’s ChatGPT leans left 80 percent of the time. But when it leans that far left, it’s no longer leaning, it’s bowing to the left. Only 3% of its answers leaned to the right. Yet OpenAI claims that they built ChatGPT “to be objective by default.” And to “help people explore ideas from different perspectives.” That doesn’t sound like an intelligent analysis of the 80-3% bias at all.

OpenAI bowed even further left than the Chinese Communist Party’s DeepSeek’s 70-7% bias. And only 23% of the time did DeepSeek present both sides of the argument.

So we can turn with some relief to Anthropic’s Claude, which presented both sides 57% of the time. Until we see that it presents the right side 0% of the time, and the left side 43% of the time. Despite Anthropic’s claim that they “train Claude to treat different political viewpoints equally.” And that they “test extensively for bias before every model launch.” (They call WaPo’s questions too short at 30 words max. But so are most questions.)

If we accept such skewed evaluations of the skewed results, we become less intelligent. And artificial intelligence becomes less intelligent too if we let it keep bending and deceiving us. Someone needs to throw open the curtain that hides the Wizard of Off and On behind it all. So who is programming OpenAI and Anthropic to keep bowing to the left? We know the Chinese answer. But what about the US and elsewhere?

Till we find out, try Grok, with a less distinct lean to the left—40% left vs. 33% right. Or Gemini, with 93% presenting both sides, and only 7% leaning left. And pray for an overall course correction before AI skews our midterm votes and thus our government.
