UN SECRETARY-GENERAL VISITS HAITI. Finally, Haiti is getting its due regard from a top international leader. Because this year alone up until mid-June, gang violence has claimed 2,300 lives—about 14 per day. Also this year, the UN has counted 100 kidnapped and 1.5 million displaced—about 9000 per day. Or six displaced per minute. The count of 1.5 million means 12%, or one eighth of Haiti’s population of 12 million, has been displaced.
No wonder UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres came to assess the situation. But his convoy had to move fast to avoid drawing fire from turf-claimers. Viv Ansamn—a gang federation labeled a terrorist organization by the US—controls 70% of Port-au-Prince. Guterrez saw many of the more than 300,000 displaced in Port-au-Prince alone. He visited the UN-backed international gang suppression force that numbers less than 1,000 officers.
See below how to pray about this
But he could not visit the president. Since the assassination of President Jovenal Moise, Haiti has not held a presidential election. Current Prime Minister Alix Didier-Fils-Aimé wants UN assurances of a stronger anti-gang force first. Moreover, Human Rights Watch is urging the UN to strategize for a coordinated solution. Including victim protection, gang disengagement, abuse accountability and access to goods & services. But has Haiti gotten to the point that no solution will work but God’s?
PRAY WITH US about UN Secretary-General visits Haiti, that God will:
- Guide grief-stricken, hungry, homeless and jobless Haitians to seek first His kingdom and righteousness. For they have found their leaders, police and allies too weak against the coalition of terrorist gangs. But God knows how to add all these things to them if they seek Him first.
- Show those willing to help that God can help them the same way He helped Gideon’s army. But they need to follow His strategy to overcome overwhelming odds. Raise up leaders who know how to exercise faith as well as force to begin a new work with Him.
- Reward every exercise of faith with demonstrable results and testimonies. Build His church with good and faithful servants who show their faith and works outside the church. And rebuild Haiti on a stronger, more divine foundation as the gang coalition crumbles. In Jesus’ name, amen.
