CUBA OPENS DOORS. On March 16, Cuba invited exiles living the US and elsewhere to invest in and own businesses in Cuba. Now “no limitations” remain, said Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Oscar Perez-Oliva Fraga. Till now Cuban-Americans have promoted sanctions until Cuba changes its communist ways.
During 2021, protests in Cuba against food & healthcare shortages and blackouts spread to 40+ locations. Cuban ministers led many protests against the 65-year dictatorship and its restrictive policies. But the regime cracked down on dissenters and especially Christians instead.
At that time, Christian Solidarity Worldwide reported that “Religious leaders and their congregations who attempted to respond to humanitarian needs, which have become increasingly acute in many parts of the island, were harassed and fined… in many cases, [they] saw the aid they were attempting to distribute confiscated.”

During 2022 and 2023, religious freedom violations rose from 272 to 600+ each year. Also in those two years, more than a million Cubans fled the island. Currently, Open Doors International ranks Cuba as the 24th worst persecutor of Christians in the world. And as the worst persecutor in the entire Western Hemisphere.
Last October Hurricane Melissa damaged more than 100K hectares of crops and 600 health institutions. (See https://www.unocha.org/publications/report/cuba/cuba-hurricane-melissa-flash-update-no-6-8.) Also it caused 2 weeks of blackouts during the 2024-25 period of blackouts—the worst in recent memory.
Now that Venezuela no longer sends oil to Cuba and the US increased its sanctions, blackouts are back. Nationwide, a power grid collapse left almost all its 10 million people without electricity. For that reason, Cuba is finally welcoming help from outside. Communism in Cuba has failed too long for communism to provide the solution. Pray that God will give Cuba grace to enter a new era of freedom with free allies and free former Cubans.
PRAY WITH US about Cuba opens doors, that God will:
- Bring Cuba from from darkness into His wonderful light. Reveal the God that the regime has tried to replace without success. And show the way from separation and isolation to participation with free nations.
- Raise up the forerunners of a new era of openness to free enterprise and freedom of religion and association. Open the doors to a peaceful transition to new participants and policies in all arenas of Cuban life. And reward servants who prove faithful to God and responsible to people with leadership.
- Help Cuba learn from its past never to fall under tyranny again. Show Cubans how to rely on God and not on government. And make it a nation resistant to the Antichrist and increasingly open to Christ.
