Tech Titans Agree We Need to Slow Down AI. But How?

TECH TITANS AGREE. When did tech titans ever agree to slow down the very technology that made them the tops in their field? On Sept. 12, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei warned AI tech was growing so quickly it could get out of control. Grok’s Elon Musk and Open AI’s Sam Altman agreed. But others, including Trump, said slowing down means China can speed ahead and control the tech world. Until, I suppose, AI gets out of China’s control. Amodei, too, called on China to adhere to AI limits.

Former OpenAI researcher Daniel Kokotajlo described how AI’s could gain the whole world. And humans could lose everything: “After they’ve accumulated all of the hard power in the world, they run the factories, they’re integrated into the military, you know, they’re sort of running the whole system, and humans are just sort of giving them orders. Then they stop taking orders at some points, and they kill off the humans.” Too often my own AI forgets orders and starts to dictate to me. Last night I had to remind it again that I’m in charge.

Former White House AI czar David Sacks says foreign actors and NGO’s can use warnings against the US. They “scare the public about AI so that these NGOs can implement their preferred approach to AI. Which is a government takeover.” Other White House officials expressed concern that the timing of scare tactics like this muddled up the midterm campaigns.

A special session of Congress on AI?

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., wants Congress to “convene a special session on AI.” In that way the truth or falsity of such warnings or dangers could come under public scrutiny. We should treat the issue with the same caution as nuclear arms. “We have [to] ensure that there’s a kill switch in place to protect humanity.”

But not a kill switch than China can override. “Whoever controls AI will control, effectively, the world,” Luna said. “Do we want that AI to be programmed and learned on our morals, our values as Americans. Or do we want it done as dystopian China? I would argue that we have to win that race.”

PRAY WITH US about tech titans agree

Father God, we declare You as the Supreme superintelligence that no one and nothing can outsmart. So we exalt You as all-wise and all-knowing from the beginning to the end. And we lift up to You all who have honest fears that AI will outpace and out-weaponize man. But those who know You have Your divine power to demolish those strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. And we believe we will eventually take every AI thought captive to make it obedient to Christ.

So give us the wisdom now to set the limits we need on AI technology. Make it work toward Your purposes and against the enemies of freedom and justice for all. And make it work to the good in ways that China and no evil agenda can subvert. Most of all, show Your Holy Spirit leads us into all truth, so AI does not become a counterfeit god. To You be all glory, in Jesus’ name, amen.
