RUSSIAN DRONE WAVE. Polish PM Donald Tusk called it the most serious threat to Europe since WWII. Specifically, at least 19 Russian military drones violated Polish airspace during an assault on Ukraine. Poland is about 400 miles east of Russia. Between the two stands Belarus, a Russian ally, from which some of the drones launched.
The rest of the drones flew over Ukraine which also shares borders with Poland and Russia. Dutch and Italian surveillance planes helped Poland intercept several drones. Moreover, eight drones crashed after getting shot down.
So is Russian signaling that it not only wants all of Ukraine? But it also wants Poland next? For that reason, Poland cited NATO Article 4 calling for urgent talks over threats to its security. But already, NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte is calling the violation “absolutely reckless.”
Would removing Putin mean ending the war?
This comes less than four weeks after Trump met with Putin expecting to find grounds for peace. Instead, Putin has intensified his attacks on Ukraine and is now testing NATO’s resolve to defend it. Although Ukraine doesn’t belong to NATO, NATO nations are working on how to defend it.
Many analysts say Putin has to show Russian oligarchs greater gains to justify the great Russian losses. Otherwise, they might arrange his fall from power. Others say NATO should take Putin out because he is prolonging the war in order to prolong his rule.
But who would replace Putin? The most reliable polls place his approval rating at 80-87%, up from 61-71% before the war. Apparently many Russians are rallying around the wartime flag. But some may fear retaliation if they don’t show approval. In any case, a change of leader may not mean a change in war policy at all.
