MADURO ASSASSINATION. Did a CIA-led plot try to kill President Nicolas Maduro and to overthrow his government? That’s what Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello alleges. Thus he announced the arrest of three American citizens, including Navy Seal Wilbert Gomez. Plus one Czech citizen and two Spaniards.
The US State Department denied any US involvement. Instead, it says the US “continues to support a democratic solution to the political crisis in Venezuela.” Yet the US did impose sanctions on 16 Maduro allies who allegedly obstructed voting on July 28. Despite claims Maduro won with 52% of the vote, Spain recognizes Edmundo Gonzalez as the winner. Gonzalez fled from possible arrest to Spain early this month. Did Venezuela arrest the two Spaniards in retaliation?
Prisoners as hostages?
Last year Maduro used imprisoned Americans to strike a deal with the US. He traded 10 Americans and a wanted fugitive in return for a presidential pardon for a close ally. The US had arrested the ally, Alex Saab, for helping Maduro avoid US sanctions through shell companies.
Will Maduro use the 3 Americans and 2 Spaniards as hostages to fend off further sanctions? Maduro’s opposition gathered tally sheets from 80% of the voting machines and published them online. Now they have evidence that Gonzalez gained twice as many votes as Maduro, as they had claimed. In contrast, the Maduro administration never showed a breakdown of the voting results. Was the “assassination plot” as fake as the election?
