Constitutional Priorities—The People Have Spoken

Constitutional priorities

CONSTITUTIONAL PRIORITIES. Last year at our Global Day of Prayer in Belize, we not only prayed for national and global issues. More than forty also signed up to pray for a whole year over the Belize constitutional process. And those forty have been getting updates to pray over at least every 2-4 weeks.

So we have prayed especially to preserve the godly foundations starting with the supremacy of God. Now the results of the public consultations have come in. I can gladly report that the main recommendation from the public consultations was this:

1 to preserve “the supremacy of God” in the Constitution, and its influence on laws and societal values. Thank God we agreed in prayer, God agreed with our prayers, and the Belize public agreed too.

Also, other major recommendations from the public survey include:

2 Transparency and accountability in government. That includes electoral processes, decision-making and resource management. And I think God would agree, and we can agree that’s essential to being good & faithful public servants.

3 Social welfare and rights. We have been praying to preserve our fundamental inalienable rights, endowed by our Creator. That’s in the Preamble to our Constitution, too. We’ve been praying to keep our equal rights to life, liberty, and personal security.

4 Protecting traditional family values. Just as we’ve been praying—for the Constitution to define family in the traditional way. As best headed by one father and one mother. And to define marriage as a union between one biological man and one biological woman.

Keep God in and the devil out

These basics come from the Bible and from the supremacy of God who designed life that way. People who forget God eventually forget the basics. Then the devil comes in to try to redefine marriage and family in his way. And to remake man and woman in his image. And in that way, to remake Belize.

That’s why we need to keep the supremacy of God in Belize. God has heard our prayers, the public has spoken, let God’s will be done in our Constitution.

But the Commission is now asking for several months’ extension to complete its work. So let’s keep praying over updates to keep the devil from getting a foothold in our Constitution. Let’s keep praying that God who began this good work will be faithful & empower us to complete it.
