FENTANYL DRUG LORD EL MENCHO KILLED. A cartel drug lord with a $15M US bounty on his head got killed by Mexican troops on Feb. 22. (Recently the US raised that bounty to $15M from the $10M shown in the photo.) Known as “El Mencho,” this former police officer helped found the Jalisco New Generation cartel in 2009.
He became the central kingpin of fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking. Former US DEA official Paul Craine called him “public enemy No. 1.” At times targeting the Mexican army, his cartel became notorious for amputations and barbaric attacks.
But the violence he caused did not end with his death. In fact the US Embassy warned visitors to stay in place in multiple states until the violent aftermath ended. Yet some tourists too close to the clashes had to evacuate their rooms, and make do with the hotel food on hand. Or search outside for their meals amid the widespread looting.
For now the battle for El Mencho’s succession continues. Meanwhile, authorities made more arrests and seized cartel rocket launchers that can bring down aircraft. But cartel troops blocked dozens of highways with burnt vehicles to prevent further military operations.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said the operation showed “the good guys are stronger.” The US Joint Interagency Task Force-Counter Cartel aided Mexico’s operation with strategic data. But Landau added, “I’m watching the scenes of violence from Mexico with great sadness and concern. And it’s not surprising that the bad guys are responding with terror. But we must never lose our nerve.”
