Haitian Streets Become Killing Fields, Courts Deserted

Haitian streets become killing fields

HAITIAN STREETS BECOME KILLING FIELDS. In three days, Nov. 17-19, 108+ gang members got killed. How did that happen? The police—assisted by a Kenya-led international force of 1,000 officers—killed some in the streets. And also some in house-to-house battles. Vigilantes in less police-protected areas killed others who threatened their turf.

But why not get them arrested to await a courtroom trial? Because the courts are barely functioning. Pierre Esperance of the National Human Rights Defense Network says Haiti is getting desperate for justice.

“The authorities have totally resigned. Justice itself is sick,” he said. “How do we explain in a country where since 2018 you’ve had all of these massacres? All of these rapes and gang rapes, kidnappings. And we have had no judicial process. The state has completely collapsed…. And the population is giving itself justice”—by taking the law into their own hands.

All help fails but divine help

The court system has stayed in shambles ever since gangs ransacked its largest courthouse in June 2022. Many cases since then have remained unsolved. Poor working conditions and low funding mean less likelihood for the situation to improve soon.

“Justice represents around 1% of the government budget,” said Marthel Jean-Claude. He serves as the president of the Professional Association of Magistrates (APM). This budget, he added, is “used solely for the payment of civil servants.” But they suffer from low pay and intolerable conditions. Many of their rooms lack windows or air-conditioners. So this has provoked magistrates, lawyers and court clerks to go on repeated strikes.

“Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away. For truth has stumbled in the street, and uprightness cannot enter… And he who turns aside from evil makes himself a prey. Now the Lord saw… Then His own arm brought salvation…” (Isa 59:14-16).

International help has failed. Now Haiti needs an invasion from heaven.
