Will ‘Conservative’ Mean Pro-Christian in Latin America?

WILL CONSERVATIVE MEAN PRO-CHRISTIAN. The vote in 3 of the nations in the Latin American region went to conservatives. Most recently, Ecuador elected “law and order” conservative Daniel Naboa its president in April. Yet he supports special rights for LGBTs and access to hormone- and psycho-therapy for trans people. And other conservative leaders have not always turned out to be conservative in the Christian sense.

Last year El Salvador re-elected Nayib Bukele as its president with a whopping 85% of the vote. First elected in 2019, he focused on stopping the terrorist MS-13 gang by imprisoning many members. He won many admirers by turning it from one of the most dangerous countries to one of the safest. Four years ago he was more pro-LGBT. But now he opposes gender ideology and same-sex marriage, in favor of “patriotic and family values.”

In Dec. 2022, libertarian economist Javier Milei took office as president of Argentina with a 56% vote. He too won many admirers. But by bringing Argentina’s inflation down from 300% yearly in May 2023 to 2.2% monthly in Jan. 2025. He stands against abortion and euthanasia, but for legalization of prostitution and drugs.

Three more nations leaning conservative

According to Newsmax, conservative presidential candidates are doing well in three more nations this year. Specifically, elections will occur In Bolivia, in Bolivia (Aug. 15), Chile (Nov. 16) & Honduras (Nov. 30). In Bolivia, “polls show conservative Cochabamba Mayor Manfred Reyes Villa leading a crowded field.” In Chile, libertarian Johannes Kaiser runs even “with liberal Providencia Mayor Evelyn Matthei.” And in Honduras, conservative former Tegucigalpa Mayor Nasry Asfura runs first in a three-way race.

In each of the three, the government has opposed the US and free markets. Also, Newsmax reports that each “has overseen a rise in crime and violence.” But will the conservative candidates’ positions include pro-life, pro-family and Christian-friendly stands? Pray that God guides the hearts of those candidates and the course of those elections.
