How the Millennium Begins—and Ends

MILLENNIUM THE LAST DAY. When the Millennium begins, we will rejoice that Satan is bound in the abyss. He will have no more power to deceive the nations any longer. But we will have to face the destruction that he–and the plagues that destroyed his kingdom—have left behind.

The oceans have turned to blood. All springs and rivers flow with blood (Rev. 16:2-4). One third of the earth has burned up. One-third of the trees have burned up. And all the green grass has burned up (8:7).

Babylon has burned up and fallen. The cities of the nations have fallen (16:19).  Moreover, vultures are eating up millions of corpses left by the Armageddon war (19:21). In all, the earth lies in ruins, beyond any human remedy.

Only Jesus Christ can restore such an earth.

Acts 3:20-21 says that at the Second Coming, the Father will “send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, whom heaven must receive until the periods of restoration of all things, about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient times.”

During the 1000 years of these “periods of restoration”, we will restore the earth with Christ. How? We believers will have glorified heavenly bodies with greatly increased powers. In fact, we will appear “like angels in heaven” (Matt. 22:30).

Then “creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption, into the freedom of the glory of the children of God” (Rom. 8:21).

Rewards for good & faithful servants

We already have power by faith to move mountains. And we already have power by prayer to heal lands (2 Chron. 7:14). But on the first day of the Millennium, Jesus will assign to us different works of restoring the entire earth.

All believers are saved by grace through faith. But beyond salvation, God rewards us according to our faithful works. To the one who made ten minas out of one, God gives ten cities. To the one who made five minas out of one, God gives five cities. But to the one who hid his mina, God takes that mina away (Lk. 19:12-26).

“Then he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas’” (v.24).

Notice that there are bystanders in this parable. The bystanders have nothing to do but watch, take minas away, and give them to others. If your faith is not producing works for God now, you will enjoy the Millennium. But mainly as a bystander. Others will be restoring cities, nations, forests and fields from ruins to glory. And then ruling over them.

Reaching &  Restoring Sinners

We will also be restoring sinners. We will be reconciling sinners to the rule of Christ as King. For Satan will be gone. Yet many multitudes of sinners will remain after the Great Tribulation. Many Scriptures call them survivors.

“And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be delivered. For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.” (Joel 2:32).

Many survivors make it through the Tribulation without receiving the mark of the beast. But also without receiving Christ as their personal Lord.

In the beginning of the Millennium, they may allow Christ to rule as their King.  But some will still not have received Christ as Savior from their sins.

Sad to say, sin will continue until the last days of the millennium. At that time Satan will come back to lead a final rebellion. “When the 1000 years are completed, Satan… will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore.” (Rev. 20:7-8).

Some have called this the saddest Scripture in the Bible. Even with Satan gone and Christ ruling the earth, sin will still hold great power over sinners. They will multiply and become like the sand on the seashore. Then they will let Satan rule over them when he returns.

Yet when the Millennium begins, we believers will have 1000 years to save them. And we will have all the advantages—glorified bodies and totally renewed minds, spirits and souls. We will have churches that keep going from glory to glory without hindrance from Satan. We will have no sins that might spoil our witness, except from converted survivors.

Survivors multiply to a trillion plus

Who can resist such a witness? In fact, multiplied multitudes will be saved. Let’s say the Millennium begins with only one million unbelieving survivors. And that population doubles every 50 years. Remember, most people will live at least to 100, most far longer (Isa. 65:20).

After 1000 years of long lives on an increasingly safe and fruitful earth, they would increase to more than a trillion. So with a trillion or more to save, we will have a big job ahead of us.

Jesus will likely start giving assignments on the first day of the 1000 years. Because He’ll come to seek and save the lost, just like He did the first time. But it will all be so much more glorious this time…
