PRAYER CHANGES POLICY. Another bill with a pretty name and an ugly underbelly. They call it the Belize Families Bill. But the National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB) and other church groups caught wind of it. And had only a few days to pore through a 116-page bill and respond to the House Committee.
According to one Catholic priest, the Families Bill “neither defines nor protects the natural family.” Yet the natural family forms the most basic building block of a coherent society. The bill “fails to guarantee children’s rights to a mother and father.” And it “binds Belize to vague and evolving international instruments beyond binding treaties.”
In this way it turns national priorities upside-down. Besides God Himself, we should put family first and international concerns last. The Catholic priest says “this shift…undermines both natural law and our sovereign authority over family policy”…
Thank God and short-notice prayer covering, the church groups had unusual favor concerning this bill. Instead of feeling like intruders, church groups were welcomed by both ruling party and opposition Committee members. Often when churches stand for godly and family values, the usual woke argument take center stage. And we find it hard to get a real hearing.
This time both parties showed genuine interest in the churches’ concerns during an all-day meeting. Resulting in the government taking the bill off the table and sending it back to the drafters for changes. Too often churches hear about drastic changes in public policy after the fact. But when we have prayer before policy, God changes policy.
Prayers heard, public heard
Two weeks ago, Altar of Worship & Prayer organized 24/7 Prayer for People’s Constitution Commission. Intercessors signed up for each of the 72 slots for 72 straight hours of prayer! So in national crises, we have a network that can lift up Belize to God for His will to be done.
Yet the media made a big deal about 10 of the 52 PCC commissioners protesting the PCC process. The process was clear—public input first, recording of input and recommendations based on input. Now the 10 commissioners want woke input inserted after lacking the courage to give their input in public. No wonder. Because the public doesn’t want God-and moral values-out of the Constitution, they want to keep Him in.
Now the PCC recommendations are sitting on Prime Minister John Briceno’s desk. Next prayer request: the PM wants to extend his time for considering them from the 60 days the PCC gave him to one year. In the meantime, more pretty bills with ugly underbellies can arise than contradict the PCC public input.
Pray now so we don’t need to haggle over distracting woke issues later!
