PAYPAL CAN CONFISCATE $2500. Beginning today, I will no longer accept contributions processed with PayPal. Because PayPal may take that money from you and from me. And without explanation.
In fact, PayPal has now made this practice its official policy. As of Nov. 3, it will expand its “existing list of prohibited activities.” They include “the sending, posting, or publication of any messages, content, or materials” that “promote misinformation.” Or “gender-critical speech.” Or “the promotion of hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory.”
But PayPal’s policy itself shows “intolerance that is discriminatory.” Ask Toby Young, director of the nonprofit UK Free Speech Union. Recently PayPal canceled three of his accounts. It gave no explanation except that Young violated its acceptable use policy. (It later restored the accounts after well-publicized critical reactions.)
Defend your right to uncensored news
Then it went on to freeze thousands of pounds in the UK parents’ group UsForThem account. Again PayPal gave no explanation. That itself produces a chilling effect on free speech. If you don’t know what they censored, anything you say may be censored.
At least PayPal should define what it means by the “misinformation” or “intolerance” they will censor. Instead, it will censor based on the “sole discretion” of PayPal. And it will charge up to $2,500 for each offense. Therefore, if it finds four offenses in one message, it will charge up to $10,000.
Because you have the right to hear uncensored news and commentary, I will no longer use PayPal. Until I find another payment method, you can still make donations by check.
