ORTEGAS POLITICAL MESSIANISM OPPOSED. The VP Rosaria Murillo now “claims Nicaragua’s allegiance to ‘God and Daniel.’” Murillo is referring to husband, President Daniel Ortega, who recently won a 4th straight term. But he did so by arresting seven other candidates for president and VP.

Now he is setting his sights against his one main opponent left standing: the Catholic Church. Because 60% of Nicaraguans are Catholic, the church has high credibility in the nation. Therefore, the Ortegas named the church as mediator during the massive 2018 protests. Now they call Catholic bishops who keep standing for civil liberties “terrorists.” So are they preparing to prosecute the bishops under their strict “antiterrorist” laws?

Already in the past few years Ortega has increasingly harassed the church. For example, his forces have attacked church buildings and intimidated worshipers. Also, they have cancelled visas, threatened deportation, and ended its tax-exempt status.

Apparently Ortega’s wife seeks to replace the church with a brand of political messianism. Christopher Ljungquist of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops charges her with “political preaching” that combines “Christian symbology with New Age occultism… They even dress statues of Mary in Sandinista colors.” So does worship of Ortega come next?
