PRO-LIFE ANTI-TRAFFICKING. On Sept. 6, the Supreme Court of Mexico voted for abortion to be decriminalized. The next morning, Eduardo Verastegui registered as independent candidate for president in 2024. He did so dressed in mourning for the many babies that would lose their lives to abortion.
Also a campaigner against child trafficking, Verastegui produced the film expose “Sound of Freedom.” At its premiere on July 4th it beat the fifth “Indiana Jones” film to reach #1 in box offices. Now he has a bigger fight on his hands, ultimately against the drug cartels which enable child trafficking.
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Mexico “ranks first in child sexual abuse; first in exploitation, homicides, and trafficking of minors.” Also first in creation and distribution of child pornography.” And who is the number one consumer of sex? The US, right across the border.
At this time, the frontrunner for president is the ruling party’s Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico City’s mayor. But Verastegui says, “It is time to remove the same as always from power. Our country needs a new way of doing politics, to eradicate corruption and impunity.”
He is running under the banner of “God, Fatherland and Family,” appealing to a population 95% Catholic. Seemingly they share his values. But will they give him the 1 million signatures he needs to run? And vote for him when he qualifies? Though a long-shot, let’s pray that like Javier Milei in Argentina, he rallies support for a big surprise.
