POPE CONTRADICTS DOCTRINE. More than one billion Catholics worldwide are wondering what to make of Pope Francis’ recently published comments on same-sex civil unions. In a newly-released documentary by a journalist, he said, “What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that.”
Apparently he stood up for it when he endorsed civil unions as opposed to same-sex marriages. This occurred when he served as archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Bible-believing Christians consider only Scripture as infallible. Catholic doctrine considers pope’s words as infallible, but only when he formally defines a doctrine. Not when he speaks to a journalist. Still, Joe Biden, a professed Catholic, will likely use this to justify his support for same-sex marriages.
But many Catholic leaders are challenging the pope on civil unions. Because he is contradicting the official statement by the two previous popes on the issue. No matter your views on Catholicism, that statement bears repeating, as it does reflect Scripture:
“The Church teaches that respect for homosexual persons cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behavior or to legal recognition of homosexual unions. The common good requires that laws recognize, promote and protect marriage as the basis of the family, the primary unit of society…
“Legal recognition of homosexual unions or placing them on the same level as marriage would mean not only the approval of deviant behavior, with the consequence of making it a model in present-day society, but would also obscure basic values which belong to the common inheritance of humanity. The Church cannot fail to defend these values, for the good of men and women and for the good of society itself.”
From Eden to Babylon
The Bible calls homosexual acts an “abomination” (Lev. 18:22), “degrading” and “unnatural” (Rom. 1:26). God created us “in His own image…male and female… God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth’” (Gen. 1:28).
So yes, only the union of a man and woman can be fruitful and multiply into a family. And only such families can populate the earth. Thus the previous popes rightfully cited “marriage as the basis of family, the primary unit of society.”
Also, “placing [gay unions] on the same level as marriage would mean…the approval of deviant behavior, with the consequence of making it a model in present-day society.” Once deviant sex becomes legal, gays can claim it’s normal. Once same-sex unions become legal, they become a model.
Do we want our children to consider sodomy as approved behavior, thus worthy of imitating? Do we want them to consider homosexual unions as acceptable as heterosexual marriages? And thus worthy of adopting children? Even when thousands of studies show that children without a father and mother fare far worse?
Catholics represent 15 percent of the world’s population. To see them embrace an abomination would sink the world far deeper into the harlot Babylon’s depravity. The Bible calls her “’Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots and of the abominations of the earth.’ And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints” (Rev. 17:5-6).
The more Christians feed this beast, the more it will succeed in devouring us.
