NEW PERSIAN EMPIRE. In what sense can we call Iran an empire? Empires force together different ethnic groups from surrounding nations. And Iran—formerly Persia—has Azeris from Azerbaijan, Afghans, Kurds from Kurdistan, Iraqis & Turkmen. When an empire falls, ethnic groups and lands they occupy often revert to their home nation.
Will that happen if and when the current Iranian regime falls? Or will those ethnic groups and lands remain under Iran? Either way, who will rule what remains of Iran? So far I can’t find anyone who is answering these crucial questions.
Reza Pahvlavi, 65, son of the former Shah of Iran, lives in exile in the US. On news programs he keeps saying that he stays in touch with dissidents protesting in Iran. But the opposition remains fractured. Most don’t want a return to his father’s monarchy. And only rarely does a monarchy get restored after a revolution.
Yet beyond Pahlavi, no clear opposition figure has arisen for the massive dissident crowds to rally around. Could he serve in a transitional government until Iran holds free and fair elections? If so, they may have the problem faced by Venezuelans—leaders who won’t leave their posts peacefully.

But the solution may surprise them and all of us. Currently one of the world’s greatest revivals has been happening in Iran for the past two decades Many Iranians are coming to Christ after seeing Jesus—“the man in white”—in dreams and visions. Most are ethnic Persian and other Iranian converts from Islam—forbidden by law.
So they gather in underground house churches and communicate with other Christians by online media. They use encrypted apps to hide their participation from the authorities. Reports say they are not only praying but also organizing for regime change. Their prayers for a new government include:
- Protection from persecution from intolerant Muslims and imprisonment.
- Openness to the true Messiah and Lord and human rights including freedom of religion.
- Strength for the churches to keep growing with more conversions and national impact.
Let’s pray in agreement with them! In the 6th century BC, Cyrus began the Persian empire by helping exiled Jews return & rebuild the temple. Now may tolerant rulers arise who open the way for Christian churches to grow openly.
PRAY WITH US about New Persian Empire:
Father God, we thank You for beginning a new work in Iran. So bring down the old order as peacefully as possible. Set the prisoners of persecution free, and let the churches openly thrive. Help oppressed Iranians to recognize what great things you have done for believers. And show believers and Iranians Your ways of making Iran great.
Raise up a new government with new leaders like Cyrus. Show them how to phase in human rights including freedom of religion. Then let Iranians of all ethnic groups exercise their freedoms and hear the gospel of Christ. Enable free and fair elections and establish new authorities. And replace Iran’s terrorist alignments with divine guidance to make peace in the Middle East. In all, do a new work in Iran that will make the nations wonder, for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen
