NATURAL MORAL LAW. As Belize enters the last leg of our constitutional process, let’s look again at the basis of that process. Many external forces are pushing us—and other nations—to submit to unnatural, immoral manmade laws. True law begins with natural laws made by God.
“When Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves.” Why? Because “they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them” (Rom. 2:14-15).
Our God-given heart, conscience and mind work together to enforce the law within every person. When each one finds the law written on his heart by God, his conscience bears witness to that law. Based on that testimony of two witnesses the thoughts of the rational mind accuse or defend him.
God-made vs. manmade laws
But he can’t find manmade laws in his heart. His conscience doesn’t witness to manmade laws as right if they run contrary to God’s law. And therefore his rational mind does not accuse him of any guilt when he breaks manmade laws.
So nothing inside a person enforces manmade laws, except fear of external punishment. The manmade state uses the threat of external manmade force to punish you for breaking manmade laws. But your heart, conscience and mind can remain free of guilt.
Yet some object that we must submit to governing authorities. True. But God expects authorities to praise “what is good” and bring “wrath on the one who practices evil.” For they too have the law in their hearts witnessed by their consciences as the basis for any accusation.
Any manmade law contrary to God’s law does not have authority established by God. Violating manmade laws will not violate your God-given conscience. However, it may cause fear of punishment. Out of fear you may conform to manmade laws without any conviction that those laws are right or good.
“Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing” (Rom. 13:3-4).
Which authority will you submit to?
I’ve pointed out before that authority here is called “it” twice. We do not obey a person. We obey “it”, the authority established for the person to uphold. If he doesn’t uphold what is right, God does not expect to submit to him in what is wrong. “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). But God says it’s necessary to submit to rightful authority “for conscience’s sake” (verse 5).
So we cannot allow manmade laws on manmade genders or manmade quotas into our constitutions. Our God-given hearts and consciences won’t witness to them. Our rational minds will accuse them of violating our nature and God-given natural laws.
Only fear of external punishment will cause people to submit to them. And submission to what is unnatural and wrong will corrupt their hearts and consciences and minds.
Pray as we conduct elections and make constitutions this year, that God will establish only what is right. And deliver us from the many evils which threaten to corrupt us.
