HAITI EARTHQUAKE KILLS. More than 2200 died in the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit southwestern Haiti on August 14. And 10,000s of houses have collapsed. The quake left 100,000s of Haitians with little or no access to food, shelter or medical help.
The World Food Program estimates that 215,000 need emergency food assistance. In all, the quake has dramatically affected 1.2 million lives. And half of them are children.
Samaritan’s Purse opened a field hospital on August 21. The high demand has already overwhelmed most hospitals. Moreover, WHO has warned that cholera, dengue, meningitis and other diseases might break out. Also, Covid-19 continues to spread. So UNICEF is rushing medicine, water, and hygiene and sanitation supplies to affected areas.
But flooding, mudslides and debris are blocking many roads. Gangs are hijacking aid trucks. And crowds are fighting over food bags.
So the World Food Program is using air and sea routes as well as roads to transport essential supplies. A UN helicopter is transporting their staff and essentials to the quake-hit areas. They seek $2.5 million for that operation.
