Forced LGBT Hiring vs. Right to Religious Freedom

FORCED LGBT HIRING. The UN plans a campaign to force nations to override religious freedom in many cases. They call it “protection against violence & discrimination based on sexual orientation & gender identity.” Or SOGI for short. A UN “Independent Expert,” Victor Madrigal-Borloz, is calling for input for this campaign now.

Specifically, he says nations should “fully comply with their obligations under international human rights law to protect and empower LGBT+ persons to pursue happiness, exercise and enjoy all their human rights, and choose how to contribute to society on an equal footing with everyone, including through effective participation in religious, cultural, social, and public life.” (But when did the nations make all this “international human rights law”? Probably never did.)

In short, he wants to force church hiring of LGBTs and mandatory drag queen story hours. And anything else in “religious, cultural, social and public life” that makes LGBTs happy. No matter how it violates others’ rights. Yet he says this is compatible with freedom of religion.

Divine design vs. self-destruction

But religion implies a God (or gods) who created us. Homosexuality so goes against the way God created us that it causes multiple diseases. We care enough about them that we must call them not to go against that design. Otherwise, they are doing themselves harm. In the same way, we must call drug addicts and alcoholics to get free from their self-destructive habits.

As in just about any religion, our God shows the difference between right and wrong. God forgave our wrongs and sent His Son to die for them in our place. Then He rose again to give us new life and power to live in His ways. So we too must forgive others their wrongs, and call them to receive Him as Lord and to live in His ways.

If they refuse, we have the right to keep calling them. We cannot force them to accept His ways. But neither can they force us to approve and accept theirs. Because freedom of religion is a matter of faith, not force. We have faith Jesus’ ways can overcome any trouble and lead to the only true and eternal happiness. For all those who pursue happiness, Jesus says, “I am the way” (Jn. 14:6). That’s what we say too.
