DRUZE LEADERS SEEK ISRAELI ANNEXATION. Now that Syria rebels have seized Druze villages in the Golan Heights, six of them want to opt out of Syria. Reportedly at a council meeting, the six villages decided to come under Israeli rule. Afterward, one man told a crowd, “We asked to be annexed to the Golan to preserve our dignity.” Otherwise, the rebels “might take our women, might take our daughters … might take our houses”.
Recently Israel moved armed forces into its buffer zone with Syria. News i24 reports “Over the weekend, IDF officers openly met with [Druze] village elders in their homes to reassure them about their safety and the continuity of their daily lives in Quneitra, a district partially within the buffer zone, where most of these villages exist.”
Caught in a puzzle of sharp moving pieces
The Druze call Jethro, Moses’ father-in law, their ancestor, spiritual founder and chief prophet. They practice a monotheistic Abrahamic faith. But they chose to identify as Syrian when Israel annexed the Golan in 1981. With the Golan now up for grabs, they’re embracing Israel, where 150,000 Druze already live. At this time 700,000+ Druze live precarious lives in Syria among fierce militants staking their own claims.
Has Syria become a puzzle of moving pieces—some bloody—that may not end with a “winner take all?” Best for world leaders to watch & wait as Trump has said, until legitimate leaders emerge from the fray.
