Conversion Therapists to Face 24 Years in Prison in Mexico

CONVERSION THERAPISTS. In Mexico the legislature is now debating a new change in the law to punish conversion therapists. It addresses counselors who facilitate a treatment that undermines someone’s gender identity. Or in any way “hinders, restricts, impedes…nullifies, or suppresses [their] sexual orientation.”

That makes all counseling a minefield to anyone who dares to do so even on a friendly or informal basis.

But let’s apply that same law to those who advocate gender transition. In that case, countless healthcare workers, politicians and journalists would go to prison. Yet that law would likely target counselors of people seeking freedom from unwanted same-sex attractions.

Reign of terror over counselors

That’s why 170+ pro-family organizations oppose this change. They say it could lead to a “regime of terror” that threatens prison terms up to 24 years.” Or fines of US $12,000+, according to National Front for the Family. It would only take a single complaint from someone who says their gender identity is being hindered.”

The 170+ groups warn that would violate health care workers’ freedom of expression. As well as their freedom of religion and right to practice their profession. Already 25 US states and many cities have some form of “conversion therapy” ban. Sad to say, those who call good evil and evil good risk reaping bitter fruit in their own lives.

For “they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity; for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him” (2 Peter 2:18-19). This law would punish people for helping to free such slaves. Instead of such laws, we need new emancipation proclamations for counselors.
