We know the Jewish temple, which fell in A.D. 70, will be rebuilt. Because at the mid-point of his 7-year reign, the Antichrist will defile the temple’s holy place with the “abomination of desolation” (Mt. 24:15). This breaks the covenant of peace he made with the Jews at the beginning of his reign (Dan. 9:27), and begins the Great Tribulation (Mt. 24:21).
Apparently the Antichrist himself guaranteed the security of the rebuilt temple and of Jerusalem. But after the abomination of desolation, he will allow ungodly Gentiles to trample over the holy city for the second half of his 7-year reign.
Suddenly the Lord comes to His temple
Yet the temple will keep standing until Jesus Himself returns on the Day of the Lord:
“And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap. He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the Lord offerings in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years” (Mal. 3:1-4).
Jesus has already made the righteous offering of His crucified body for our sins. But He will return to the temple and rule the earth from there. The wealth of the nations will come to Christ as righteous offerings to glorify His kingdom. Those righteous offerings will not include sacrifices for sins. Instead they will consist of free-will offerings of all kinds of material and spiritual blessings with which we will overflow during His millennial reign.
Not only that, but we will reign with Christ when He rules the earth from His temple…
