BLM BLAMES CUBAN PROTESTS. Black Lives Matter has said “The people of Cuba are being punished by the US government.” BLM blames the protests on the decades-long US embargo. It has “instigated suffering for the country’s 11 million people – of which 4 million are Black and Brown.”
So why are Cuban protesters—both Black and Brown–waving US flags and blaming the Cuban regime? And why did the US Senate just vote to provide internet access to Cuban protesters that Cuba has denied?
Cuba has followed the pattern of other Marxist regimes like Venezuela and its former patron, the USSR. The USSR collapse resulted in Cuban food shortages, steep inflation and blackouts, sparking protests. Still the Cuban government kept pursuing Marxism. Then Cuba grew more dependent on Marxist Venezuela, which also collapsed. So why won’t Cuba’ leaders join the free world instead?
Because they are growing rich off the poverty of their Black and Brown subjects. Similarly, BLM’s Marxist founders grow rich off the poverty of Blacks whose lives matter so much to them. For instance, BLM Marxist co-founder Patrisse Cullors has bought four high-end homes for $32 million. And she did this while BLM riots raged, causing destruction and more poverty in Black communities.
BLM wants to defund police who are needed to protect these communities. But they don’t want to defund the Cuban regime which is cracking down on Cuban protesters. Instead, they rail about the Trump sanctions, and now the added Biden sanctions, against the Cuban regime.
Choice between free-market democracy and state-run tyranny
Would the US continue those sanctions if Cuba became a free-market democracy? With opportunity for all—Black, Brown and whiter Hispanics—to climb out of poverty? No. But the regime has a decades-long vested interest in keeping them poor and powerless.
Does it matter to Black Lives Matter that the regime cracks down on protesters who just wave flags and protest? And who don’t loot and destroy and as so many BLM protesters did? Does it matter that the regime is beating and imprisoning protesters? And working hard to cut their internet communications?
The protesters only want necessary food supplies and essential medicines and basic freedoms. But the tyrants running this unprofitable Marxist economy don’t think they can afford that. No wonder the protests have spread to 40+ locations across the island.
Yet 1619 Project founder and CRT proponent Nikole Hannah-Jones has praised Cuba’s regime. In a 2019 podcast she called Cuba the “most equal multi-racial country in our hemisphere.” And she added, “that’s largely due to socialism.” If Cubans are equal in anything, they are equally and desperately poor.
Cuba serves as a warning to us. Let’s not allow any such CRT school curriculum to lead us down to the dead end of Marxist oppression. So pray for increasing freedoms—of speech, association, and faith—that will bring Cuba increasing prosperity instead.
