Common Sense vs. Conventional Wisdom in Trump’s Dealings

COMMON SENSE VS. CONVENTIONAL WISDOM. How do you find the best way to make a deal when conventional wisdom is not common sense? Conventional wisdom says not to risk offending an ally like Colombia by repatriating their illegal migrants. Common sense says a president should take back his own citizens if they’ve gone somewhere illegally. So consider the alternative. Does the US keep another country’s illegal citizens? Countries have so long taken advantage of the US that non-sense has become conventional wisdom.

Trump is applying common sense to other issues where false conventional wisdom has prevailed. So is Panama reneging on its 48-year-old commitment to keep its canal zone neutral? And to give the US a discount? Conventional wisdom now says don’t make waves in the Panama Canal. But common sense says China domination of the canal’s Atlantic and Pacific sides means US defeat. Specifically, defeat for the US any time China decides to go to war.

From conventional wisdom to political correctness to wokeness

Conventional wisdom now says don’t disturb little Denmark about its colonial hold on Greenland. But common sense sees both Denmark and Greenland powerless to resist Chinese or Russian seizure. That would mean domination of the now strategic and mineral-rich Arctic Circle. So it only makes sense for the US to stake a claim to benefit all NATO countries before it’s too late. Thus Trump is applying common sense to places where few if any have applied it before. The more you think about it, the more sense that his common sense makes.

If we don’t apply common sense to what the media calls conventional wisdom, it will turn into political correctness. And political correctness will turn into wokeness. Then common sense will no longer be common. And the woke world will no longer make sense.
