PRETEEN MIGRANTS TRAVEL UNACCOMPANIED. A 12-year-old Belizean girl, Ashley Enriquez, served as a spokesperson for four unaccompanied minors. Two other girls, ages 14 and 12, and one boy age 9 were traveling alone when they found each other. The three other children besides Ashley came from Honduras.
Near the border at Mission, Texas, Breitbart interviewed Ashley, the one English-speaking child. She said she had traveled for 13 days from Belize to join her father in Houston, Texas. Later, her mother in Belize told LOVE-FM that she took the risk to send Ashley because of her own poverty and ill health. For years they had been living in a broken-down house without electricity or water. Moreover, she claimed that Ashley had safely found her father.
But if that is so, countless other migrant children have not found such happy endings. In fact, you can see that in the empty expanse around the four children, anyone could have approached them. Too often human traffickers do so and make young children slaves for life.
“Biden invited us”
Also near Mission, Texas, a man who calls himself “Junior” says migrants cross his private land every day. “They all say the same thing, Biden nos invitó, Biden invited us.” They come in groups like the 190 illegal migrants found in nearby Rincon Village. Many say that corruption, poverty and the effects of hurricanes Eta and Iota drove them from their countries.
About 12,900 unaccompanied migrant children are staying at US Health and Human Services shelters. In addition, another 5,300 are staying in Border Patrol facilities. Some of them are holding up to 1640% of their capacity.
Though officials have strictly limited press coverage, the few published scenes show the woeful conditions. Children lie all day side-by-side under silver foil coverings surrounded by plastic walls. Still, no one, not even new border czar Kamala Harris, has answered vital questions: What will protect them from the spread of Covid and other diseases among them? And where will they go next?
